Case Study: Clip & Zip Gear

Messmaker Logo
Background
A startup team in Philadelphia comprised of swimmers has come up with a product geared towards swimmers. The Clip and Zip backpack is made specifically for use by swimmers, as it allows wet swimsuits and towels to air-dry overnight while the bag front opens entirely using a clip that attaches them securely. The design eliminates the cold damp towel and swimsuit for early morning practice.

The Problem
The logo would be used for print, digital and embroidery so the detail needed to be strong enough not to lose in the stitching process.

The Challenge
During our initial meeting, I asked them about future growth and the possibility of other sports, such as soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey, to name a few, that also required personal equipment to dry. This was not something they had considered since all of the stakeholders only participated in swimming. From this conversation, the stakeholders felt that I had a very valid point and made the decision to change the name to Clip & Zip Gear.

My Process
Research: In my process, I conducted a zoom workshop to learn more about the company, their mission, and future goals. From the initial research and information, I gathered from the workshop I was able to sit down with my sketchbook and sketch to get ideas out of my head and down on paper.

My Solution
For this design, I wanted to focus on bright colors that represented water, spring, sky, and fish. I wanted the colors to be playful and fun. I designed the logo to represent a zipper by creating the logotype. To maintain brand integrity I created a brand standards guide to ensure specs were followed during the manufacturing process.
